The 142^nd Annual Kentucky Derby is this weekend! It’s the perfect combination of horse racing, glamorous hats, roses, the summer sun, a requisite mint julep and celebrities. We thought about giving you 142 reasons to celebrate the Derby, which obviously, we could easily come up with. But when it comes down to it, we only need one reason, and that is fashion. See and be seen!

Prepare for the spectacle and use these quick tips to prep your outfit for your debut to the Derby!

DO: Embody your inner Southern Belle

No need to run around saying “Bless Your Heart,” but nonetheless, now is the time to pull out all the stops. Express your femininity; think spring pastels and florals. But make it you. Be unique. Be eccentric. Be poetic!

DO: The Derby hat tradition

It is THE tradition. It’s a core element that makes the Derby so memorable. This is your opportunity to go big. There are no rules or expectations for your Derby hat. Flowers, delicate lace and ribbon, and/or bold colors- choose a hat that is an expression of you. Make it memorable with a wide rim that speaks to the Southern roots you’ve adopted for the day or go modern with a simple headpiece of dainty feathers and florals.

DO: The Dress

Notice how the dress comes secondary to the hat. In true Derby Day style, keep your dress classic and simple. Your hat and shoes are the focal points anyway! Let your dress speak to your femininity and the smile of spring. Go all out and consider florals, or keep it chic and understated so all eyes are on what counts.

DO: Statement Shoes

This is your opportunity. You’ve got the fantastic hat and the chic dress. Round out your outfit and make it complete with a well thought out pair of statement shoes.  Complement your outfit with a classic pair of heels that speak to you and your individuality, or go functional with fun-loving sandals that will keep you comfortable on your feet all day long. Naturally as shoe lovers, we do both! Start with those heels you just can’t get enough of, and transition to the more practical sandal as your day progresses. Go big and have both- this is the Derby after all!

DO: Accessorize

Beware! Your accessories are exactly that, an accessory. Keep eyes on your fantastic hat and use subtle accessories to compliment your outfit. Forego large statement pieces and instead select simple pieces that don’t detract from the main focus- that hat! Embody your inner Southern Belle here too and opt for a delicate string of classic pearls.

DO: Think Function

If you’re on the go at the derby or attending a derby party, keep in mind the day is long and hours are spent outside. Think function. Don’t forget the random necessities to ensure you stay glamorous all day long. Water, sunscreen, sunglasses, wagers, power bank; think about the day and plan accordingly.
